Child Therapy in Northwest Indiana

In-person therapy for children ages 6-11, provided through their school.

Children do not always have the words to explain why school, friendships, emotions, or everyday routines have become difficult. Karos Counseling may provide individual therapy for children ages 6-11 when sessions can be coordinated with a participating Northwest Indiana school.

School-based availability depends on the child's needs, location, and whether an appropriate arrangement can be established with the school.

A clear path for families

Families may begin with the regular free consultation. Services for this age group are in person only, and parent involvement is an important part of treatment.

You may be noticing things like:

  • Anxiety, frequent worry, or fears that interfere with everyday life
  • Emotional outbursts, shutdowns, or difficulty calming down
  • ADHD-related difficulties with attention, organization, impulse control, or completing tasks
  • School avoidance, morning struggles, or distress connected to attending school
  • Difficulty making friends, handling conflict, or understanding social situations
  • Low confidence, perfectionism, or becoming easily discouraged
  • A major family, school, or life transition that has been difficult to manage

A child does not need to be in crisis or have a confirmed diagnosis before a parent asks whether additional support could help.

Why doesn't Karos Counseling offer virtual therapy for younger children?

Virtual therapy can work well for many teenagers and adults, but it is not the format Karos Counseling uses with children ages 6-11. Younger children often engage more naturally when therapy can include movement, hands-on activities, visual tools, and direct interaction in a familiar environment.

Rather than asking a younger child to remain engaged through a screen, Karos Counseling limits therapy for this age group to in-person services that can be coordinated through the child's school. This allows the work to be more developmentally appropriate and better connected to the setting where many difficulties may be occurring.

How school-based child therapy works

Step 1

Start with a consultation

A parent or guardian schedules a free 15-minute consultation to discuss what they have been noticing and whether Karos Counseling may be an appropriate fit.

Step 2

Determine whether school-based care is possible

Services require an appropriate arrangement with a Northwest Indiana school. Availability depends on the child's location, needs, school participation, and scheduling.

Step 3

Complete the intake process

If services can be arranged, the parent or guardian completes the required intake documents and participates in the initial assessment process.

Step 4

Begin in-person support

Sessions are provided in person at the school and tailored to the child's developmental level, treatment goals, and everyday needs.

Parents are an important part of the process

Therapy does not happen in isolation from a child's family. Parent input helps clarify what is happening at home, what has already been tried, and which changes would make the greatest difference.

Depending on the child's needs, parents may receive practical strategies for responding to anxiety, supporting emotional regulation, improving routines, reinforcing skills, and reducing patterns that unintentionally keep problems going. The exact level of involvement may vary, but parents should expect to be active partners in their child's care.

Seasonal outdoor groups may also be offered

Karos Counseling may periodically offer outdoor groups based on community interest, clinical fit, season, and enrollment. These groups can give young people an active and less formal setting in which to practice skills, connect with others, and build confidence.

  • Emotional regulation
  • Social confidence and friendship skills
  • ADHD and executive-functioning support
  • Other topics identified through family and community interest

Groups for children and groups for teenagers would be offered separately and divided into developmentally appropriate age ranges.

No specific group, date, or opening is guaranteed. Families interested in possible future groups may use the regular consultation link to express interest.
